Basic rhythm

So now you can do basic sounds almost fine? If not stay practising those sounds until you find them easy for you. Don't practise too hard because when you don't practise there's developing still in your mind when you think sounds. That could feel crazy but beatboxing is very visual hobby. You can imagine drum kit in your mind. You can hear basic rhythm for example from tv or radio. It's good to look and hear other beatboxers too if there are beatboxers in your town, village or country. Basic rhythm based on counting 1 2 3 and 4 which includes one tempo. So it looks like this:

Bassdrum - Hihat - Snare - Hihat and then again from beginning.
(1) (2) (3) (4)

Do those sounds exactly same order again again and again. Did it feel good? If you listen to your radio you can hear this kind of stuff for example schlager music. If you can do this beat and follow your favourite artist then you are good. Try this also:

Bassdrum - Hihat - Hihat - Snare - Hihat - Hihat- Bassdrum - Hihat

That is so called 8-Beat. There's eight sounds but there's no fill-in. Fill-in means a place where rhythm goes again to beginning. In that case fill-in comes on last sound on that line. You need there new sound which is open hihat. That hihat which comes between bassdrum and hihat is closed hihat.

Open hihat is almost same as closed hihat but you need to add 'shh' after it. So it sounds 'tss' like you try to say 'this'. You can imagine in this place that you are swishing to someone's ear or trying to keep someone quiet. Do this imagination short as possible and you got good open hihat. So our rhythm line goes like this:

Bassdrum - Hihat - Hihat - Snare - Hihat - Open hihat - Bassdrum - Hihat - Hihat - Snare - Hihat - Open hihat etc. Keep going on untill you can do this:

Bassdrum - Hihat - Hihat - Snare - Bassdrum -Hihat - Open hihat - Snare - Bassdrum - Bassdrum - Hihat - Snare

What was that? Two bassdrums one after the other? Yes it's bassdrum fill-in. There's lot's of that kind of stuff in rock music or in jazz. Ok now you have lots of new stuff to learn. Keep going and don't give up. Soon you can do same rhythms as your grandchild or neighbour brat. This is not so hard as it looks at first sight. If you have still problems with basic sounds go to last lesson about them and practise more.

Basic beatbox sounds

I take three sounds to you. These are basic sounds what you need at your beginning. Bassdrum is number one, snare is the second and hihat is the number three. If you don't have any idea what I'm talking about look at wikipedia about drums

So we start at bassdrum and how it works. Say syllable 'bo' and put your mouth in like you were suprised something. Do this many times as like. You soon recognize that this sounds boring but let's change this in this way: Say now this syllable with distended cheeks and forget that 'bo' sound as pronouncing. Keep going on and you can do bassdrum soon. Push air harder from your cheeks and do it sharply. Like spitting out something awful from your mouth. This was just imagination what I like to you know. Someone can remember on field where farmer spitted snuff out mouth. This is bassdrum.

Next sound is snare. Snare drum sound is near bassdrum believe or not. Say syllable 'pif, pef or pist'. Some of these syllables size in your mouth better than others. Let your lower teeth touch your upper lip. Pull you lower lip little bit inside and say syllable again. Now forget syllable and say only pronouncing. In your imagination you can have vision about blowing air downwards or same as above about bassdrum. I want to you decide what is your feeling about snare. Once you understand how it works it's great moment.

I remember my practinsing about these two sounds, bassdrum and snare. I practise these sounds so long untill my lips chapped. Good thing for you is to buy some vaseline or lip balsam which protect scars, infection and drying. Also take a bottle of water along when you practise. Drink a little bit water and continue practise.

Ok our third sound is hihat. Hihat sound is easy. Say syllable 'ti' behind upper teeth and then forget syllable and say only pronouncing. Keep your teeth together and do it again. Your hihat comes sharper. Here were our sounds which started. You can do them as queue. First bassdrum then snare and then hihat.

After all don't practise too hard. Keep pauses and start again. This should be fun for you and you can practise anytime you want. You decide how long you want to practise. It's also good thing listen to your inside. When beatbox fly bites you, it's best bite you ever get. Ok there was good basic drum kit for you to practise.

Beatboxing for older people

This is start about this blog. Have you ever think how your children, grandchildren or neighbor does beatboxing with his mouth? How it is possible to product such noises? Have you ever think about that you can also do such noises and enjoy about feeling what it brings. For me beatboxing has brought many good vibes and it's my lifestyle. Beatboxing is ageless, you know. Everyone can start it without thinking am I too old or too young.

Beatboxing history is old too. The roots go far behind 80's. There is one man whose enthusiasm towards mouth drumming was big. His name is Doug E. Fresh (put in wikipedia and check it out). He did same noises as beatbox machine. His friend Barry said: "What you do, you should call it human beatbox". That was good start for beatbox developing. Nowadays beatboxing is quite youth concentrated. Someone may say I'm wrong but I feel the situation is exactly so. I could imagine, beatboxing is quite different for older people. Public opinion is: yeah it's great thing, how that kid do it? and that's it. Nobody of them could say, I want to learn it. Older people might say: it's youth thing, it doesn't belong to my age, it's too hard for me or what other people say if I start this. But I can almost quarantee that none of those arguments are practical. This doesn't mean that all older people think about this way. There's all kind of human types. Someone starts soon as possible and someone starts after someone else has done it before him or her etc. Here starts my mission to bring beatboxing for you older people who wondering being as good as youngster beatboxers in technically or entertainly. You can choose your way how to learn.

Only things which are demanded that you have enthusiasm to start and you can count from one to four as rhythm 1 2 3 4. All other things come one by one. I have kept beatboxing course and I did it in that way. All my students learnt beatboxing in theirs way and time. So where you learn? You learn in this blog. I'm open to any thoughts which comes to your mind and also I'm open to people who like to help me about this project. Give me opinions and suggestions how you want to learn and how we cooperate this beatboxing system for older people.
